Here's this week's list: 1. Superfly - Curtis Mayfield Nice rhythm going, but I liked Freddie's Dead a bit more. 2 out of 5 2. Convention '72 - Delegates There was a run of these novelty records taking snippets of other hits and putting them into the context of current US events. This one featured "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" in the Nixon/McGovern race. Nan and Chev, were these records released and played in Canada at all or did you guys have your own versions of these records? 2 out of 5 3. Corner of the Sky - Jackson 5 I think I heard this record about 4 times when it was out and then that was it. I have the Brady Bunch singing this one and it's its even more blasse' (spelling?). 1 out of 5 4. Do Ya - The Move The original version pre name change to ELO with Roy Wood still in the group. 2 out of 5 5. Alive - Bee Gees Starting to hear more r&b influence with this one. 2 out of 5 6. In Heaven There is No Beer - Clean Living Anyway, the song is indelibly etched into the fabric of school bus trip songs along with 100 Bottles of Beer on the Wall and The Wheels on the Bus Go Round and Round. 1 out of 5 7. Keeper of the Castle - Four Tops Went Top 10, but it's not one of my favs from this period. 2 out of 5 8. Sitting - Cat Stevens as a fan, it's kind of a mediocre choice for a Cat Stevens song. 2 out of 5 9. Long Dark Road - Hollies Remember thinking this sounded the Osmonds when it was out. Nice sound, nice record 3 out of 5 10 Superstition - Stevie Wonder Remember thinking "wow" when i heard the clavinet and horn arrangements in this one. The beginning of what I think is Stevie's best creative output. 4 out of 5

I have never heard of Convention 72, therefore it wasn't released north of 49. I prefer the Move's version over ELOs (probably because I'm a bigger fan of Roy Wood than Jeff Lynne). 4 I'm not a Cat Stevens fan, but don't mind Sitting. It has a nice melody. 3 I really like Long Dark Road, the way it starts off almost folkish, and then those inimitable Hollies vocals chime in. 5 I think Superstition is a 5. (Jeff Beck's version of it is also very good). First time I heard the song, I was floored by it! I don't recall the others on the list.

Agree Mark 2 stars 2) Convention 72 - I love these break records and this one was really good. Kissinger, have you anything to add? -" Gotta find a woman, gotta find a woman, gotta find a woman". (from Jimmy Castor's Trogadylte). It is rumored Dickie Goodman worked uncredited on this one but have no verification. Hey I bought a CD copy of over 60 minutes of Goodman's recordings so I'm a dementite. recording 5 of 5 stars. 3) Corner Of The Sky - I was taught if you can finds no good say nothing. Really, this is from the dark days of Jackson's Motown history . Agreed 1 of 5 stars. 4) Never heard this version although ELO's version gets 5 stars. 5) Alive - I hear no R&B influence. It was classic Bee Gees with the Beatlesque/propgressive/classical influences. You know, the pompous, arty crap....... but I love it. It may well be my favorite Top 40 Bee Gees single. The lryics seems to express the way I felt growing up and at times, although I am a Christian now, I still feel that way. I believe most people feel that way at times. Think about the lyrics. " I'm Alive and that's all. I can get up just as fast as I fall. That I can walk and run but I'll never crawl/ and in the end it doesn't matter at all. ........ There's a reason for believing that I've never been alive." Of course, detractors would say it's another of Robin's weeping woe is me and i can't live with myself songs, but I loved these records 5 of 5 stars ( naturally).
